Why we constructed, commissioned Ekpan women centre- Chevron

The General Manager, Policy, Government and Public Affairs, Chevron, Mr. Deji Haastrup says the NNPC/Chevron joint venture constructed and commissioned the Ekpan Women Development Centre because Chevron views women development as the bedrock of societal advancement.

The Chevron Boss, Mr. Deji Haastrup who was represented by Mr. Trust Inimgba said the project was designed by an Ekpan indigene, Mrs. Gladys Anaworo and the commissioning on Friday January 23, was possible due to the Project Specific Agreement, PSA as well as the commitment and selfless service of the members of the Project Review Committee.

He stated that Chevron encourages partnership with relevant stakeholders that will translate into sustainable development of communities within Chevron’s areas of operation.

Secretary to the Delta State Government, SSG, Comrade Ovuozurie Macaulay in a message stated that people of Ekpan Community are enjoying the fruit of their agitation for a women centre to be constructed in the community, noting that, “if well utilized, the women centre will be a money spinner for them”.

The Delta Government Scribe, who was represented by the Senior Special Assistant to Delta State Governor on Community Affairs, Barr. Vincent Omorie admonished people of Ekpan Community “to think outside the box to put the centre to use in such a way that it will reflect in the lives of the Ekpan women and at the same time create wealth from this project to ensure it is driven to enviable height”.

The Chairman of Ekpan Development Committee, EDC, Mr. Godwin Omasibro while thanking Chevron for funding the project, stated that the people look forward to the value the centre will generate in terms of training of the women and promised that the centre will be utilized to its maximum.

According to him, the NNPC/Chevron joint venture has over the years shown uncommon dedication to the community in the areas of donation of books to schools, drugs and medical accessories to General Hospital, Ekpan as well as award of scholarships to its indigenes.

The Head of the Ekpan Community, Chief Newton Agbofodoh who was represented by Chief Otomewo thanked Chevron for the centre and appealed to the company to provide the facilities needed to operate the centre.

He quipped that the project was borne out of a 2 day agitation held in 1987 by people of Ekpan community in Uvwie Local Government Area of Delta State.
