The formation of the All Progressives Congress, APC following the merger of ACN, CPC, ANPP, a faction of APGA and few other political parties no doubt shook the political fabric of Nigeria, with many social commentators and political pundits viewing the merger party as a viable option to the inefficiency and poor performance of the ruling PDP since 1999 when the current political dispensation began.
The frenzy that greeted the party whose merger was triggered by former Head of State and ex Presidential Candidate of ANPP and CPC, General Muhammadu Buhari (Rtd) as well as former Lagos State Governor, Senator Bola Ahmed Tinubu of the ACN was further heightened when five PDP governors out of the “rebel seven” defected to the APC.
This was immediately followed by the defection of 37 PDP legislators in the House of Representatives to the APC as well as the controversial defection of 10 Senators to the new party.
There were even strong speculations that the Speaker of House of Representatives, Hon. Aminu Tambuwal was in the process of publicly defecting to the APC to run as Presidential Candidate with a view to strengthening the APC hold in the House of Representatives and possibly staging a formidable force to battle President Goodluck Jonathan of the PDP in the 2015 Presidential poll.
But suffice to say that events in the last few weeks which has seen a Court judgment asking the House of Representatives’ leadership to declare the seat of the 37 House of Reps defector members vacant, the unusual silence of the 5 PDP defected governors led by Rotimi Amaechi of Rivers State, the rumoured Muslim/Muslim Presidential/Running Mate Candidacy of the party as well as its perceived lack of internal democracy evident in its ongoing ward and local government congresses occasioned by alleged infiltration of PDP members into the party ranks are factors which suggest that APC may be heading for the rocks in the build-up to the heavily anticipated 2015 general elections.
